In 1978 Dan Hannula returned to Wisconsin after working as a U.S. Navy prosecutor (Judge Advocate) and Assistant U. S. Attorney in Portland Maine. Upon his return, a law firm that tried cases for insurance companies recruited Dan. After a few years, Dan concluded that it would be more satisfying to work instead for people, rather than insurance companies. So, in 1981, he founded his own law firm. His goal was to create a firm that focused on doing just a few things, but doing them very well.
In 1985 Gary Halom, who had been working as Assistant Distract Attorney for Douglas County, joined Dan in practice. Gary had extensive trial experience, even winning a difficult murder case. Over the years Gary helped to cement the strong reputation of Hannula & Halom for high quality work in complex litigation.
Over the years Dan developed an extensive statewide reputation in condemnation trial work—the taking of land for highways and utilities. Dan now lectures on that subject at national seminars.
In 2005, Ryan Scherz joined Dan and Gary. Ryan, a valedictorian of Northwestern High School and a U.W. River Falls and University of Minnesota Law School graduate, has excelled in trial work winning some of the largest settlements in the firm’s history. Ryan is now the managing partner of Hannula Halom & Scherz.
In 2013 Kevin Van Ert rounded out our team. Kevin, a Superior native and graduate of U.W.S. and the University of Wisconsin Law School, fills a need for family law litigation and estate planning.
